Laser Scanners, the Death of Cavities, Space Drifting, Horrible Tweets and More... [The Best Stories Of The Week]

Laser Scanners, the Death of Cavities, Space Drifting, Horrible Tweets and More...You might be on summer vacation, but there was plenty of news popping up when you weren't looking. Whether it was Digg selling for a paltry sum, the discovery of a molecule that can prevent cavities, the first picture posted on the internet, or the disturbing revelation that the government will track us with laser scanners, a lot happened this week. Check it all out below.

It's summer time. You want to look good. You want to feel good-especially after that hangover from the time you tried to drink all day without passing out. So how are you supposed to relax with an adult beverage on the beach, porch, or patio? By choosing one of the nine healthiest drinks you can pour up. More »

O, how the mighty fall have an asthma attack and roll off the side of a cliff. Digg, erstwhile king of the internet, just sold itself for a mere $500,000. In 2008, it turned down Google's offer of two hundred million. More »

I hardly remember 2006. You probably don't either. But that's when Twitter first started! And looking back how we tweeted that fateful first year, it's probably better that none of us remember it. Just check out how awful everyone was at it. More »

Facebook Now Shows Everyone Every Stupid Comment You Edited [Facebook]

Jul 13, 2012 3:11 PM

Facebook Now Shows Everyone Every Stupid Comment You EditedFacebook comments are a fireworks show of impulsiveness, like much else with Facebook. Mercifully, FB just gave us the ability to edit things we wish we might have said differently. But now, our screwup is open for everyone to see.

Facebook Now Shows Everyone Every Stupid Comment You EditedUsually we applaud transparency at Gizmodo, but isn't the entire point of an edit feature to clean your tracks, whitewash the past, and leave behind a better statement than the one you cranked out to begin with? Not anymore. Whenever a friend (or foe) edits any Facebook comment, an Edited button will be tacked on—click that, and you've got a big gaping window that shows the entire history of the comment. Every. Single. Change. Did you screw up a fact? Say something insulting? Hurt someone's feelings? Lie? It'll be there.

Facebook Now Shows Everyone Every Stupid Comment You EditedOf course, you can just delete any incriminating comment, but then we're just back to square one. Online editing is only good if it allows you to banish your inferior self expression to an unreachable internet vortex. Now we're all just going to make fools of ourselves.

[Thanks, Shane!]

Extra-Long Tablecloth Instantly Turns Any Table Into a Fort [Design]

Jul 14, 2012 2:30 PM

Extra-Long Tablecloth Instantly Turns Any Table Into a FortWith a child-size dose of imagination anything can become a fort or a playhouse. But this custom tablecloth available from Etsy seller CoolSpacesForKids makes it incredibly easy to convert your dining room table into a miniature mansion, mission control, or Fort Knox.

It not only means you don't have to strip the beds to find enough sheets to cover the table, but you can also probably get away with eating a meal on it while your kids hang out inside. It's available in both stereotypical boy and girl colors for $85, and as a word of advice: you might want to remove that elaborate centerpiece before your kids move in. As I recall, forts and play houses are prone to frequent earthquakes.

Who Wants a Quad-Core Computer for $130? [Guts]

Jul 13, 2012 4:20 PM

Who Wants a Quad-Core Computer for $130?When Raspberry Pi released their diminutive, ARM-based PC for $35, people were rightfully chomping at the bit to get their hands on something so cheap and small and hackable. But the 700 MHz, single-core ARM 11 processor it wasn't exactly a powerhouse. Enter Hardkernel's ODROID-X, which packs a quad-core Samsung Exynos chipset on a 3.5 inch motherboard.

With each Cortex-A9 core clocked at 1.4 GHz, the ODROID-X also has 1 gigabyte of RAM, a Mali 400 GPU, six USB ports, ethernet, audio in/out, Micro HDMI and an SDHC reader. Plus it's capable of running Android or Ubuntu, giving you computing flexibility. Sure, it's no Ivy Bridge, but the Exynos processor is pretty amazing for its size. And for $130, this little chipset could become the heart of your next DIY project. [Hardkernel via Ars Technica]

Dogpile's Autocomplete Suggestions Are Bonkers [Humor]

Jul 13, 2012 3:40 PM

Dogpile's Autocomplete Suggestions Are BonkersBefore Google there were many search engines worth trying out on the Internet. Technically, many of them still exist. What, you haven't visited Dogpile recently? Well maybe you should, if only to see what its puny algorithm thinks you're searching for.

Punch "Am I," "does," or "can you" into the search box and Dogpile serves up wonderful, nonsensical suggestions. Ahem:

"Can you get arthritis in thr face"
"Am i required to attend sc divorce mediation hearings?
"Am I evil?"

Who searches for this stuff? Judging by the results, either something's funky with Dogpile's algorithms or its users are seriously confused about whether they've murdered a bunch of people. Head over to Geekosystem for more autocomplete madness. [Geekosystem]

Is Chewing This Spiky Rubber Disc Really As Effective As Brushing Your Teeth? [Health]

Jul 14, 2012 9:00 AM

Is Chewing This Spiky Rubber Disc Really As Effective As Brushing Your Teeth?Designed for those times when you've just had a meal but can't sneak away to brush your teeth, the Rolly is a small rubber disc covered in 276 spiky bristles that promises to be as effective at cleaning your teeth as brushing, when chewed like a piece of gum.

Besides reaching into every nook and cranny of your mouth, and gently stimulating your gums while you chew it, the Rolly contains Xylitol and Fluoride which are claimed to fight plaque and strengthen tooth enamel. And using the small disc doesn't require toothpaste, a mirror, or even water to rinse your mouth out afterwards. When you're done, you just spit it into the garbage like a piece of gum. The Rollys come in multi-packs for about a dollar a piece, making them a little too expensive to use for all your daily brushing needs. But in an emergency, they could be far more effective than the go-to toothpick or piece of gum. [Rolly via bookofjoe]

What Horrible Web Browsers Do Your Parents Use? [Chatroom]

Jul 13, 2012 5:20 PM

What Horrible Web Browsers Do Your Parents Use?Google is doing something interesting at Best Buy stores that seems positively ass backwards: they're giving away copies of their Chrome browser on CD. What is this?! 1998?! But when you think about it, it makes sense; they're trying to get less tech savvy users—like our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles—to switch over to a proper browser that won't load their computers with as many trojans and malware.

But alas, we still all have horror stories of friends and family members using archaic browsers on their Compaq Presarios. So what are the worst web browsers you've found on other people's computers? [via HackerNews]

Camping Cutlery Adapters Make Your Marshmallow Stick Far More Useful [Cutlery]

Jul 14, 2012 7:00 PM

Camping Cutlery Adapters Make Your Marshmallow Stick Far More UsefulMost campers don't have the outdoor skills necessary to build a shelter, set a trap, or even start a fire. But there's one thing even the most amateur outdoorsman can make—a marshmallow stick. And with these cutlery adapters, that primitive tool can then be used to consumer more than just s'mores.

Designed by Sharon Myoung, the S&S cutlery simply requires a camper to find a stick, shorten it to a usable length, and then sharpen the point so it can be twisted into a threaded bolt. Assembly really only requires pre-teen skill levels, but the final product can vastly improve your outdoor dining experience. But if this still seems like too much effort, you can probably just pack a regular spoon and fork—but where's the fun in that?

Greetings! I've been reading your weblog for a long time now and finally
got the bravery to go ahead and give you a shout out from Kingwood
Texas! Just wanted to mention keep up the great job!

I'm really enjoying the theme/design of your site. Do you ever run into
any web browser compatibility issues? A few of my blog visitors have
complained about my blog not working correctly in Explorer but looks
great in Safari. Do you have any solutions to help fix this problem?

I am curious to find out what blog platform you have been utilizing? I'm
experiencing some minor security problems with my latest site and I
would like to find something more risk-free. Do you have any
recommendations?

Hmm it looks like your website ate my first comment (it was extremely
long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I'm
thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer but
I'm still new to the whole thing. Do you have any helpful hints for
first-time blog writers? I'd really appreciate it.

Woah! I'm really loving the template/theme of this website. It's simple,
yet effective. A lot of times it's difficult to get that "perfect
balance" between superb usability and visual appearance. I must say that
you've done a great job with this. Additionally, the blog loads super
fast for me on Chrome. Exceptional Blog!

Do you mind if I quote a couple of your posts as long as I provide
credit and sources back to your weblog? My website is in the very same
niche as yours and my visitors would genuinely benefit from a lot of the
information you present here. Please let me know if this ok with you.
Appreciate it!

Hi would you mind letting me know which webhost you're working with?
I've loaded your blog in 3 different browsers and I must say this blog
loads a lot faster then most. Can you recommend a good hosting provider
at a reasonable price? Thank you, I appreciate it!

Very good website you have here but I was curious about if you knew of
any forums that cover the same topics discussed here? I'd really love to
be a part of online community where I can get advice from other
experienced individuals that share the same interest. If you have any
recommendations, please let me know. Thanks!

Hello! This is my 1st comment here so I just wanted to give a quick
shout out and tell you I really enjoy reading your articles. Can you
suggest any other blogs/websites/forums that go over the same topics?
Thanks a ton!

Do you have a spam issue on this website; I also am a blogger, and I was
curious about your situation; many of us have created some nice
procedures and we are looking to swap solutions with others, be sure to
shoot me an email if interested.

Please let me know if you're looking for a article writer for your blog.
You have some really great articles and I feel I would be a good asset.
If you ever want to take some of the load off, I'd really like to write
some content for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please
send me an e-mail if interested. Regards!

Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just
your articles? I mean, what you say is important and all. However just
imagine if you added some great photos or video clips to give your posts
more, "pop"! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this
site could undeniably be one of the most beneficial in its field. Good blog!

Fascinating blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from
somewhere? A design like yours with a few simple tweeks would really
make my blog stand out. Please let me know where you got your theme.
Thank you

Hey would you mind stating which blog platform you're using? I'm looking
to start my own blog soon but I'm having a tough time selecting between
BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because
your design and style seems different then most blogs and I'm looking
for something completely unique. P.S Apologies for
being off-topic but I had to ask!

Hey there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your
article seem to be running off the screen in Safari. I'm not sure if
this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser
compatibility but I thought I'd post to let you know. The layout look
great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Thanks

With havin so much written content do you ever run into any issues of
plagorism or copyright infringement? My site has a lot of unique content
I've either written myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is
popping it up all over the web without my permission. Do you know any
techniques to help reduce content from being stolen? I'd certainly
appreciate it.

Have you ever thought about publishing an ebook or guest authoring on
other sites? I have a blog centered on the same subjects you discuss and
would love to have you share some stories/information. I know my
audience would value your work. If you are even remotely interested,
feel free to shoot me an e-mail.

Hi there! Someone in my Facebook group shared this site with us so I
came to take a look. I'm definitely enjoying the information. I'm
bookmarking and will be tweeting this to my followers! Outstanding blog
and great style and design.

Amazing blog! Do you have any recommendations for aspiring writers? I'm
planning to start my own blog soon but I'm a little lost on everything.
Would you recommend starting with a free platform like Wordpress or go
for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I'm
completely confused .. Any suggestions? Cheers!

My coder is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have
always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he's tryiong none
the less. I've been using Movable-type on various websites for about a
year and am nervous about switching to another platform. I have heard
excellent things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can transfer all
my wordpress posts into it? Any help would be really appreciated!

Does your site have a contact page? I'm having problems locating it but,
I'd like to shoot you an e-mail. I've got some ideas for your blog you
might be interested in hearing. Either way, great blog and I look
forward to seeing it improve over time.

It's a pity you don't have a donate button! I'd without a doubt donate
to this superb blog! I guess for now i'll settle for book-marking and
adding your RSS feed to my Google account. I look forward to new updates
and will talk about this site with my Facebook group. Talk soon!

Greetings from California! I'm bored at work so I decided to check out
your blog on my iphone during lunch break. I really like the knowledge
you present here and can't wait to take a look when I get home. I'm
shocked at how fast your blog loaded on my phone .. I'm not even using
WIFI, just 3G .. Anyways, very good site!

Howdy! I know this is kinda off topic nevertheless I'd figured I'd ask.
Would you be interested in exchanging links or maybe guest authoring a
blog post or vice-versa? My site covers a lot of the same topics as
yours and I feel we could greatly benefit from each other. If you're
interested feel free to send me an e-mail. I look forward to hearing
from you! Wonderful blog by the way!

At this time it looks like Wordpress is the best blogging platform out
there right now. (from what I've read) Is that what you're using on your
blog?

Excellent post however I was wondering if you could write a litte more
on this subject? I'd be very thankful if you could elaborate a little
bit more. Appreciate it!

Hey! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering if you knew
where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form? I'm using the
same blog platform as yours and I'm having problems finding one? Thanks
a lot!

When I initially commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments
are added" checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four
emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from
that service? Thanks!

Hey! This is my first visit to your blog! We are a group of volunteers
and starting a new project in a community in the same niche. Your blog
provided us useful information to work on. You have done a wonderful job!

Greetings! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which
blog platform are you using for this site? I'm getting sick and tired of
Wordpress because I've had issues with hackers and I'm looking at
options for another platform. I would be great if you could point me in
the direction of a good platform.

Good day! This post could not be written any better! Reading this post
reminds me of my good old room mate! He always kept talking about this.
I will forward this article to him. Pretty sure he will have a good
read. Thanks for sharing!

Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you
relied on the video to make your point. You clearly know what youre
talking about, why waste your intelligence on just posting videos to
your weblog when you could be giving us something informative to read?

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and
gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if
you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants
to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

The other day, while I was at work, my cousin stole my iPad and tested
to see if it can survive a thirty foot drop, just so she can be a
youtube sensation. My iPad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know
this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!

I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the structure of your
blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you
could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with
it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2
pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?

Hello, i read your blog occasionally and i own a similar one and i was
just wondering if you get a lot of spam remarks? If so how do you
prevent it, any plugin or anything you can recommend? I get so much
lately it's driving me insane so any assistance is very much appreciated.

This design is spectacular! You obviously know how to keep a reader
amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my
own blog (well, almost...HaHa!) Wonderful job. I really loved what you
had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

I'm truly enjoying the design and layout of your blog. It's a very easy
on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and
visit more often. Did you hire out a developer to create your theme?
Superb work!

Hi! I could have sworn I've been to this website before but after
browsing through some of the post I realized it's new to me. Anyhow, I'm
definitely happy I found it and I'll be bookmarking and checking back
frequently!

Hello there! Would you mind if I share your blog with my zynga group?
There's a lot of people that I think would really enjoy your content.
Please let me know. Thanks

Hi, I think your site might be having browser compatibility issues. When
I look at your blog in Chrome, it looks fine but when opening in
Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a
quick heads up! Other then that, very good blog!

Sweet blog! I found it while surfing around on Yahoo News. Do you have
any suggestions on how to get listed in Yahoo News? I've been trying for
a while but I never seem to get there! Thank you

Hey there! This is kind of off topic but I need some help from an
established blog. Is it tough to set up your own blog? I'm not very
techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast. I'm thinking about
creating my own but I'm not sure where to begin. Do you have any ideas
or suggestions? Many thanks

Hi! Quick question that's entirely off topic. Do you know how to make
your site mobile friendly? My blog looks weird when browsing from my
iphone. I'm trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to
correct this issue. If you have any suggestions, please share. Thank you!

I'm not that much of a online reader to be honest but your blogs really
nice, keep it up! I'll go ahead and bookmark your website to come back
later on. Cheers

I really like your blog.. very nice colors & theme. Did you make
this website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you? Plz
reply as I'm looking to design my own blog and would like to find out
where u got this from. thanks

Amazing! This blog looks exactly like my old one! It's on a completely
different subject but it has pretty much the same layout and design.
Superb choice of colors!

Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few
of the images aren't loading correctly. I'm not sure why but I think its
a linking issue. I've tried it in two different internet browsers and
both show the same results.

Hi there are using Wordpress for your blog platform? I'm new to the blog
world but I'm trying to get started and create my own. Do you require
any coding expertise to make your own blog? Any help would be really
appreciated!

Heya this is kind of of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use
WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I'm starting
a blog soon but have no coding knowledge so I wanted to get advice from
someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!

Hey! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers? My
last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing a few months of
hard work due to no data backup. Do you have any methods to prevent hackers?

Hey! Do you use Twitter? I'd like to follow you if that would be ok. I'm
absolutely enjoying your blog and look forward to new posts.

Good day! Do you know if they make any plugins to safeguard against
hackers? I'm kinda paranoid about losing everything I've worked hard on.
Any tips?

Hi! Do you know if they make any plugins to help with Search Engine
Optimization? I'm trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted
keywords but I'm not seeing very good results. If you know of any please
share. Kudos!

I know this if off topic but I'm looking into starting my own weblog and
was wondering what all is required to get set up? I'm assuming having a
blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I'm not very web smart so I'm
not 100% sure. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Kudos

Hmm is anyone else having problems with the pictures on this blog
loading? I'm trying to find out if its a problem on my end or if it's
the blog. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure why but this website is loading extremely slow for me. Is
anyone else having this issue or is it a issue on my end? I'll check
back later on and see if the problem still exists.

Hi there! I'm at work surfing around your blog from my new apple iphone!
Just wanted to say I love reading through your blog and look forward to
all your posts! Keep up the great work!

Wow that was odd. I just wrote an very long comment but after I clicked
submit my comment didn't show up. Grrrr... well I'm not writing all that
over again. Anyways, just wanted to say fantastic blog!

Along with everything that appears to be building throughout this
specific subject matter, your viewpoints are generally fairly
stimulating. Nevertheless, I beg your pardon, because I do not subscribe
to your entire theory, all be it radical none the less. It would seem to
us that your comments are not entirely justified and in reality you are
your self not even entirely certain of your argument. In any case I did
enjoy looking at it.

I do like the way you have framed this issue and it does supply us a lot
of fodder for consideration. On the other hand, because of everything
that I have seen, I simply just trust when other opinions stack on that
folks continue to be on issue and don't get started upon a tirade
regarding some other news du jour. Still, thank you for this fantastic
piece and though I do not necessarily concur with the idea in totality,
I regard your point of view.

Almost all of the things you mention happens to be astonishingly
accurate and it makes me wonder why I had not looked at this with this
light before. This particular piece truly did switch the light on for me
as far as this specific topic goes. Nevertheless there is actually one
particular factor I am not too comfortable with so while I attempt to
reconcile that with the actual core theme of your point, permit me see
just what the rest of your subscribers have to say.Very well done.

The core of your writing whilst appearing agreeable initially, did not
settle very well with me after some time. Someplace within the
paragraphs you were able to make me a believer but just for a short
while. I however have a problem with your leaps in assumptions and you
would do nicely to help fill in those breaks. In the event that you
actually can accomplish that, I will undoubtedly be impressed.

Throughout this grand pattern of things you'll get an A+ for hard work.
Exactly where you actually confused us was in your specifics. You know,
as the maxim goes, details make or break the argument.. And that
couldn't be much more true at this point. Having said that, allow me say
to you just what did deliver the results. The article (parts of it) is
certainly extremely convincing which is most likely the reason why I am
taking an effort to comment. I do not really make it a regular habit of
doing that. Next, although I can see a leaps in reason you come up with,
I am not convinced of just how you seem to unite the points which in
turn make the actual conclusion. For the moment I will, no doubt yield
to your point but wish in the future you link the facts better.

This Outdoor Table's Recessed Grooves Stop the Wind From Blowing Away Your Meal [Wish You Were Here]

Jul 14, 2012 10:00 AM

This Outdoor Table's Recessed Grooves Stop the Wind From Blowing Away Your MealWhen the weather is beautiful you want to spend as much time as you can outdoors. And that includes enjoying meals on the patio, which designers Marco Marotto and Paola Oliva make even more enjoyable with their conceptual dining set that stops the wind from blowing everything away.

The Bye Bye Wind set of table and chairs look like your typical plastic patio furniture, but the table's surface features recessed areas for plates, cups, and serving trays that prevents them from being swept away by even the strongest of backyard winds. And for each guest's sitting comfort, the back of the chairs feature small pockets for stashing a phone, keys, or anything else that's uncomfortable to keep in your pockets during a meal. The center of the table even has a plastic bottle crusher so you can keep empty beverage containers safely stowed, and from the looks of the design the Bye Bye Wind set should be fairly easy to produce using the same techniques as other plastic furniture. So let's make it happen already.

The First Nexus 7 Is Shipping Today [Android]

Jul 13, 2012 2:47 PM

The First Nexus 7 Is Shipping TodaySurprise! The Google Nexus 7 tablet—aka the best way to spend $200—is shipping today. If you are looking for a tablet of this size, you should be cheering right now. It got a four-star GizRank in our review:

Totally. At $200 there is pretty much no reason to buy a Kindle Fire at all. If you love reading Kindle Books and listening to Amazon MP3, you just install those apps and you're good to go. It also gives the iPad a good run for its money. You can argue that the iPad is a better tablet, but is it really $300 better? As useful as tablets are, they're still kind of luxury items. $200 for a full-fledged, seriously-spec'd, fully-capable tablet is an absolute steal. Get it. Seriously.

The units shipping today are the pre-orders, according to Google Play.

Locked and loaded, ready to play: we've started shipping +Nexus 7 pre-orders today! google.com/nexus/#/7

Watch This: POV Footage of Pilot's Crash Landing Proves a Valuable Learning Tool [Video]

Watch This: POV Footage of Pilot's Crash Landing Proves a Valuable Learning Tool

Larry Hockensmith—a licensed power pilot for over 40 years, but still a student glider pilot—was flying over the Cleveland National Forest, a few miles southwest of Lake Elsinore, CA, when he executed a rather dramatic and unfavorable outlanding, effectively "totaling" his Schweizer 1-26 sailplane, valued at $8,500.

The entire event was captured in eery, HD silence—the GoPro video providing an invaluable after-the-fact learning aid, from which Hockensmith and fellow pilots can watch and determine what went wrong and how better to handle a similar such situation in future, should that ever become necessary.

The admirably eloquent write-up accompanying his YouTube post appears in full below:

Complacency has no place in soaring. I was trained better than to have lingered on the lee-side of a ridge over rough terrain. The dramatic outlanding was due to my actions exclusively.

While tight turns over roofs, brushing treetops and dodging street signs are not desired flight maneuvers, they do make for interesting viewing. An almost perfect (for a power pilot and plane but not a sailplane) landing until an unnoticed mailbox catches the right wing of the sailplane about 8 inches from the tip.

The original is 16 minutes of Full High Definition Video and shows every second of the events leading to this out-landing/ crash. It has been closely reviewed and much learning has taken place. My instructor, safety officer, FAA and NTSB were all outstanding professionals in helping grow skills from this experience.

More videos on this are coming. See if you can spot how the differences between a power pilot's training and a glider pilot's training could have contributed to this outcome.

We Need To Stop Developing These Creepy Pole Climbing Robot Snakes Immediately [Video]

Jul 14, 2012 4:00 PM

We Need To Stop Developing These Creepy Pole Climbing Robot Snakes Immediately Watching this robotic snake almost effortlessly slither its way up a pole and onto this researcher's arm leads to one obvious conclusion—this research must be stopped. Like immediately.

Robotic versions of almost any other living creatures are just fine, and I have no issue with the possibility that I might one day cross paths with robotic sharks, or cybernetic cockroaches. But the idea of a robot snake creeping its way up my leg? That's not cool. And if anyone from this research team is reading this, I highly recommend keeping a loaded shotgun in your lab at all times for the day when your creation suddenly becomes self-aware and decides you're no longer needed.

What do you think?

How to Become an Aquanaut [Video]

So, you want to become an aquanaut? Do you have the right stuff? What is the right stuff? Do you even know what an Aquanaut is?

According to Saul Rosser, Operations Director at Aquarius undersea research base, An aquanaut is a diver that lives under the water for 24 hours or more using saturation diving techniques and an underwater habitat to sleep, eat and work between dives.

The normal max bottom times don't apply when you're an Aquanaut as they do in normal divers. This is because a saturation diver doesn't try to avoid their blood and tissues filling up with inert gasses that can kill or maim a diver if they rise too quickly. Saturation divers don't rise at all for many days. Instead, they saturate their body with these inert gases under the high pressure environment and they stay under pressure, resting between dives in a pressurized home like Aquarius that does not allow blood to bubblr as it might if a diver tries to swim to the surface without slowly decompressing over the course of a day.

To become an Aquanaut you've got to have a hot research proposal that requires steady, long periods of time studying the ocean itself or its inhabitants. Then, you've got to make sure you can work and live underwater without dying.

That means getting medical sign off by a doctor and being able to swim 25 meters underwater on one breath, with no fins or mask. And cross 400 meters in 12 minutes. Then there's the dive experience requirement: at least 50 dives at approximately the 60 foot depth that Aquarius Reef Base exists at. And you must be comfortable diving at night, which is the aquanaut-ical equivalent of an evening stroll. Ultimately, Rosser says you must be "comfortable in the water with the gear and procedures required so that aquanauts aren't surprised."

The divers on the mission next week will be using helmets with tethers that pass audio and a nearly unlimited supply of air through a heavy duty helmet, so they have been practicing using these hats, too. The photos and videos above are of the training session where the Aquanauts were required to flood their helmets and vent them. This is a bit tougher in a 30 pound helmet that, unlike a scuba mask, will probably make the average diver feel claustrophobic when it fills up with water.

The Aquarius Reef Base's dive specifications are a combination of standards AAUS (The American Academy of Underwater Science) and OSHA, which combine the heavy duty standards of hardhat divers who will be lifting, welding and building things with the more intricate work of scientists which is still more demanding of civilian diving.

How many Aquanauts have existed? Rosser estimates that over 117 Aquarius Reef Base missions, there have been 500 or so. And if you count all the aquatics through the last 50 years of bases—perhaps 60 bases in total—he estimates the numbers in the thousands.

I'll be diving to Aquarius a few times this weekend, but I won't saturate, which requires a day of decompression. So, I can't technically change my title on my driver's license to Aquanaut.

You Can Bend and Contort This Flexible Ribbon Lamp Into Any Position Imaginable [Lighting]

Jul 14, 2012 6:00 PM

You Can Bend and Contort This Flexible Ribbon Lamp Into Any Position ImaginableIdeal for makers and tinkerers who often need a light source as close to what they're working on as possible, this beautiful LED desklamp was designed by Alberto Fraser with an incredibly flexible transparent PVC neck making it almost infinitely adjustable.

The touch sensitive base also lets you turn the lamp on or off with just a tap, and adjust its brightness with a swipe of your finger. Which is certainly slick and convenient, but a far cry from justifying its ridiculous $500+ price tag. Particularly when you can only get it in black or white. You offer this thing in a hot rod red option, and maybe we'll talk.

Perfect Sandwich Review: Go to Hell, Sogginess [Video]

Perfect Sandwich Review: Go to Hell, Sogginess Perfect Sandwich Review: Go to Hell, Sogginess It's lunchtime. (Somewhere.) You've worked hard. Or maybe you haven't worked hard at all, loser. But either way, you're probably pretty hungry—and nothing ruins the moment more than a damp sandwich. This container could banish wet sandies forever.

A plastic box that separates sandwich bread from the moist components of a sandwich.

Those who enjoy sandwiches but are bothered by their tendency to become soggy by lunchtime.

Materially superb—super sturdy. But how are you supposed to manipulate the container's myriad panels and sections? The instructions do nothing to help.

Put your bread on top of this plastic part that separates the wet ingredients from everything else. Insert a cooler pack to keep things fresh. Snap the whole thing shut. Forget about it until noon.

The Perfect Sandwich truly does keep bread from soggifying.

You have to reassemble your sandwich at work, school, or wherever else you might be eating said sandwich. Double the sandwich labor, and messy fingers.

Why does one of the plastic panels take such strength to snap shut? What is it sealing against? Ghosts?

Tested with cheddar cheese, sliced roast beef, mustard, white bread, and a fresh sliced tomato.Meat, cheese, mustard, and tomato slices were stored and sealed together, but had become goop by the time they were ready for extraction and reassembly.Sandwich tasted OK. Bread was in perfect condition. Not sure how old that cheese was.

You have to take your sandwich components out of the fridge, put them in a box, and build your sandwich from scratch again. You could make two soppy sandwiches in the time it takes to use this product.

The question is: Is this something that matters to you? Some people separate the bread in wax paper, then build the sandwich again at lunch every day. If that's you, this is a must buy. If you will just eat any soggy sandwich to stave off hunger, don't bother.

• Material: BPA-free plastic

Toys Playing with Toy-Size Apple Gadgets Will Make You Either Sneer or Coo [Apple]

Jul 13, 2012 9:40 PM

Toys Playing with Toy-Size Apple Gadgets Will Make You Either Sneer or CooToys playing with their own overly-engineered, brand-name, Apple gadgets is what could probably be called—quite accurately—the pinnacle of pretension. Still, anything made miniature is automatically cool. And these tiny iPods, iPads, iPhones, and MacBooks are no exception. Not even when Woody from Toy Story is posed with a doll-size iPhone to look like he's Instagramming his sushi dinner.
